The Policy for the responsible use of AI in Government Agencies comes into force on 1 September 2024. Departments and agencies must meet the mandatory requirements for accountable official(s) by 30 November 2024 and transparency statements by 28 February 2025.
The policy aims to create a coordinated approach to government use of AI and has been designed to complement and strengthen—not duplicate—existing frameworks in use. Given the rapid evolution of technology, the policy is designed to adapt and evolve, incorporating leading practices and changes in the regulatory environment. It is intended to complement and strengthen existing frameworks, legislation, and practices that govern government use of AI.
The challenges raised by government use of AI are complex and inherently linked with:
- the APS Code of Conduct
- data and information governance
- cyber security, and
- privacy.
This policy is to be applied alongside existing frameworks and laws to ensure agencies meet all their obligations. Read the Policy here.
