This InfoGovANZ session provides a practical overview of Australia’s laws, standards and government guidance on AI. Unlike the EU, Australia has not introduced a single AI statute. Instead, it has adopted a standards-based, principles-driven approach, supported by guidance that is intended to operate alongside existing legal and governance obligations. Understanding how these pieces fit together is now essential for boards, executives and practitioners.

The session will cover:

  • Australia in the international AI context
    A short overview of how Australia’s approach compares with the EU, US and UK, and what this means for organisations operating across jurisdictions.
  • The role of AI standards in governance and assurance
    An overview of the development of AI standards and assurance frameworks, and how they are intended to translate principles into operational controls. This includes their role in supporting defensible decision-making and evidencing compliance with the AI standards and legal obligations.
  • Australia’s AI guidance with emphasis on how organisations should embed governance across the AI lifecycle.  This section will address:
    • Data governance, including data quality, provenance, metadata, retention and disposal
    • Privacy and personal information management, particularly where AI systems ingest mixed or secondary datasets
    • Record-keeping obligations, including what needs to be captured as a record of AI-enabled decisions, system use and oversight
    • Archives and long-term accountability, including how AI-related records support organisational memory, public trust and regulatory scrutiny
    • Demonstrating accountability, ensuring that AI use can be explained and justified years after deployment, not just at go-live
