InfoGovANZ MeetUp: Information Assets, Ownership and the Enterprise Information Asset Register

Effective Information Governance begins with visibility. Organisations need to know which information assets matter, why they matter, who is accountable for them and how they connect with systems, suppliers, risks, controls and increasingly AI.

The second MeetUp in our Enterprise Information Governance in Practice series will focus on information asset governance and the role of the Enterprise Information Asset Register.

Drawing on the InfoGovANZ Enterprise Information Governance Framework, we will explore:

• what constitutes an information asset and how material assets can be identified and grouped;
• assigning accountable information owners and distinguishing ownership from stewardship and technology custody;
• defining purpose, value, criticality, quality, authorised use and lifecycle obligations;
• why information ownership is a business accountability rather than solely an information-management or technology responsibility;
• establishing an Enterprise Information Asset Register as an enterprise visibility and governance mechanism;
• using a federated approach to connect existing data, records, system, risk, supplier and AI inventories rather than creating unnecessary duplication;
• linking information assets with risks, controls, dependencies and AI use; and
• using asset information to support prioritisation, reporting, resilience and investment decisions.

The session will consider practical approaches to building information-asset visibility without turning the Register into another static compliance inventory.
