On 3 May 2024, the OECD and partner countries released the updated AI Principles, which include five recommendations for policymakers. The updates respond to recent developments in AI and the rapidly evolving risks associated with newer technologies such as generative AI and foundation models.
The 5 values-based principles are:
- Inclusive growth, sustainable development and well-being
- Respect for the rule of law, human rights and democratic values, including fairness and privacy
- Transparency and explainability
- Robustness, security and safety
- Accountability
The 5 recommendations for policymakers are:
- Investing in AI research and development
- Fostering an inclusive AI-enabling ecosystem
- Shaping an enabling interoperable governance and policy environment for AI
- Building human capacity and preparing for labour market transformation
- International co-operation for trustworthy AI
The key revisions include:
- Addressing safety concerns from undesired behaviour and use beyond intended purposes
- The growing need to address mis- and disinformation and information integrity
- Clarifying information for transparency and responsible disclosure
- Reinforcing references to environmental sustainability
- Underscoring the need for regulation to be interoperable
between jurisdictions
