Privacy and data breaches – how information governance minimises the risk
There is general awareness of the increase in cyber security attacks on organisations, and the significant risks that this poses to enterprise information security, legal and regulatory obligations, as well as the significant costs and reputational issues that result. It is regularly reported that cyber attacks and data breaches are on the rise. The Identify Theft Resource Center Breach reported that US data breaches hit a record high of 783 in 2014, which was a 27.5% increase over the previous year, with over 85 million records exposed.[i] Telstra’s Cyber Security Report[ii] states ‘nearly a quarter of all the organisations we surveyed had suffered some kind of business interruption due to an IT security breach during the last 12 months.
