MeetUp: Beyond AI and Data: Governing Information as an Enterprise Asset

AI adoption is increasing organisational focus on data governance, cybersecurity, privacy, regulatory compliance and AI-specific controls. These activities are necessary, but they can still remain fragmented, focused on individual systems, datasets, platforms or use cases.

The larger challenge is whether the focus on data governance for AI systems and tools is overlooking data and information across the organisation as enterprise-wide sources of risk, evidence and value.

The session will explore how organisations can govern data and information not only as inputs into AI systems, but as valuable organisational assets that require clear ownership, classification, access controls, lifecycle management, retention and disposal, accountability and assurance.

Discussion themes will include:

• why AI adoption is increasing attention on data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and AI-specific controls
• why system-specific controls are necessary but not sufficient
• how the focus on data governance for AI tools may overlook broader enterprise data and information risk
• how Information Governance can help connect data, records, privacy, cyber, legal, risk, technology and business accountability
• what it means to govern information as an enterprise asset, not merely as input into individual AI systems
• how organisations should manage AI-generated information, including summaries, transcripts, recommendations, classifications and drafts
• how to strengthen access controls, classification, metadata, retention and disposal before AI scales across the organisation
• what capabilities professionals need to work across AI, data governance, Information Governance, privacy, cybersecurity and compliance
